Do You Take Pants Off For Pelvic Exam?

Yes, you do need to remove your pants & underwear for a pelvic exam. This is necessary so your healthcare provider can properly examine your reproductive organs, including the vulva, vagina, & cervix.

What Happens During the Exam?

After you’re given privacy to change, you’ll undress from the waist down & cover yourself with a gown or drape. Then…

  • You’ll lie on the exam table & place your feet in footrests (called stirrups).

  • The provider will begin with a visual check of the external area.

  • A speculum may be used to gently open the vaginal walls for a clear view of the cervix.

  • A manual exam might follow to assess the uterus & ovaries.

Your Comfort Comes First

It’s completely normal to feel nervous, especially if it’s your first time. But trained providers always prioritize your privacy, explain each step, & proceed only with your consent. You can ask questions or stop the exam at any point.
