How Do You Wrap Your Ankles For Muay Thai?

Wrapping your ankles for Muay Thai provides added support and stability to the joint, reducing the risk of injuries and protecting against sprains or strains during training and competition. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to properly wrap your ankles for Muay Thai:

Materials Needed:

  • Athletic tape or ankle wraps (usually 2 inches wide)
  • Scissors (for cutting the tape)
  • Optional: pre-wrap or underwrap for added comfort and to protect your skin from adhesive residue.

Instructions:

  1. Preparation: Make sure your feet and ankles are clean and dry. If you prefer, you can apply pre-wrap or underwrap to protect your skin from the adhesive on the tape.
  2. Begin Low: Start the wrap at the bottom of your foot. You can either start with the tape just below your toes or at the arch of your foot, depending on your preference.
  3. Anchor: Hold the end of the tape against your skin to create an anchor. Wrap the tape around your foot (over the top of the foot and under the arch) at least twice to secure it.
  4. X-Pattern: Now, create an X-pattern by wrapping the tape diagonally from the inside of your foot to the outside, then from the outside to the inside. Repeat this pattern two or three times, ensuring you cover the whole foot and ankle, starting from the bottom and working your way up.
  5. Figure-Eight: After the X-pattern, continue to wrap the tape in a figure-eight pattern. Begin on the inside of your ankle, wrap around your heel, and bring it up on the outside of your ankle. Repeat this motion, gradually working up the ankle joint.
  6. Secure the Heel: When you’ve wrapped your ankle to the desired height (usually just above the ankle joint), finish by securing the tape around the back of your heel. This adds stability to the joint.
  7. Cut and Secure: Once you’ve reached the desired height and you’ve wrapped your ankle sufficiently, cut the tape and secure the end by pressing it against the anchor you created at the beginning.
  8. Repeat on the Other Ankle: If you’re wrapping both ankles, repeat the process for the other foot.
  9. Test for Comfort and Fit: After wrapping, ensure that your ankles have adequate support and that the tape is not too tight, which could restrict blood flow. You should be able to move your feet and toes comfortably.
  10. Training: You’re now ready to train or compete with added ankle support. If you experience any discomfort or if the wrap feels too tight during your training session, remove and re-wrap your ankles as needed.

Properly wrapping your ankles for Muay Thai helps provide support, reduces the risk of injury, and allows you to train and compete with greater confidence. If you’re new to wrapping your ankles, consider seeking guidance from a coach or more experienced training partner to ensure you’re doing it correctly.
