To begin, your provider will typically ask a few questions about your symptoms, health history, or goals for therapy. After that, the physical assessment starts. In most cases, only one or two gloved fingers are gently inserted into the vaginal or rectal canal. The number of fingers used depends on the specific goal of the exam, your comfort level, & your unique anatomy.
Why Fingers Are Used in the Exam
Manual (finger-based) assessment allows the provider to…
-
Feel the strength & tone of pelvic floor muscles
-
Identify tight, weak, or painful areas
-
Detect muscle coordination or relaxation issues
-
Assess the position & movement of pelvic organs
These exams are especially useful during pelvic floor therapy to help guide a personalized treatment plan. Most importantly, your therapist will clearly explain every step & ensure that your consent & comfort come first.
Is the Exam Painful?
A pelvic exam should not be painful. But if you feel discomfort at any point, let your provider know immediately. Gentle techniques & plenty of lubrication are used to keep you relaxed. You’re in control throughout the entire process, nothing happens without your clear agreement.
Do You Have to Do It?
Not always. While internal exams can provide valuable insight, they are never mandatory. Many patients benefit from external evaluation & exercises alone. Your therapist will discuss options with you & work within your comfort zone.
