In Major League Soccer (MLS) matches, overtime (OT) is utilized as a means to resolve draws and determine a victor. In MLS, if a match ends in a tie after regular playing time (typically 90 minutes), an additional period of extra time is played to determine the winner. Extra time consists of two 15-minute halves (30 minutes total), and if the match remains tied after extra time, it may proceed to a penalty shootout to determine the winner, depending on the competition format and rules in place. Overtime provides teams with an opportunity to break the tie and secure victory before resorting to a penalty shootout.
