Your first pelvic floor physical therapy session is focused on understanding your symptoms, setting goals, & creating a personalized treatment plan. It’s typically gentle, informative, & centered around your comfort.
Here’s What You Can Expect…
Detailed Conversation
You’ll start with a one-on-one discussion with your therapist. They’ll ask about…
-
Your medical history
-
Symptoms (like pain, leakage, or pressure)
-
Daily habits, exercise, and bladder/bowel function
-
Pregnancy or surgery history, if relevant
This helps your therapist understand the full picture before starting any physical assessment.
Movement & Posture Assessment
Next, your therapist may observe how you…
-
Sit, stand, & walk
-
Breathe & engage your core muscles
-
Use your abdominal & pelvic floor muscles
This external evaluation gives insight into posture, muscle coordination, & tension patterns.
Pelvic Floor Muscle Exam (Optional)
If you’re comfortable, the therapist may suggest an internal exam to assess pelvic floor muscle strength, tension, & coordination.
-
Note – This is always explained in detail and only done with your full consent.
-
If you prefer to wait or skip it, that’s completely okay, many treatments begin externally.
Education & First Steps
Before you leave, you’ll…
-
Get a clearer understanding of your condition
-
Learn about your treatment plan
-
Possibly be given breathing or relaxation techniques to try at home
